If it weren't for the sweet warble in Johnny Bush's voice and his well-exercised penchant for using even
pedal steel as if it were a lush string section, this Texas honky-tonk vet could break your heart. His tunes
on this 1998 collection are all Kleenex-drenching in their heartfelt depths, with lines like "Any fool could
see she was planning to leave / At least, any fool but me." Both the fool and the sensitive artist, Bush
paints himself the injured ("My life's a neon nightmare since you've gone") and yet manages a kind of
vocal fabric that belies the care he's taken with his voice since his early-'60s emergence. He massages
the lyrics with restrained musical accompaniment, even when you'd expect something caustic. While his
relationships with Willie Nelson and Ray Price helped Bush find a place in the country music world, he's
seen few recording dates over the decades. But for all that, Bush's chops are still sharp, his song

A greatest-hits package from an artist who thrived on concept albums is a frightening proposition. Even
the liner notes refer to him as the "all-time #1 country album artist." To top it off, much of Nelson's best
work--Yesterday's Wine, Shotgun Willie, and Phases And Stages, for example--was commercially
unsuccessful (not to mention on a different label). While Red-Headed Stranger and Stardust did make
commercial inroads, they're best digested as single entities. With all that said, these Columbia chart
toppers, which span from 1975 to 1989, still make for enchanting listening. By illustrating Nelson in his
various moods---pop standards, honky tonk, cowboy, folk, gospel---it provides a worthwhile introduction,

Across the Borderline was produced in 1993 by Don Was, then flush with work following his helming of
Bonnie Raitt's commercial breakthrough, Nick of Time. In fact, his celebrated clients at the time
included everyone from Iggy Pop to Neil Diamond. Here he surrounds Willie Nelson with a vast cast of
superstar admirers that includes Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Lyle Lovett. If the thought of Nelson and
Lyle Lovett dueting on Peter Gabriel "Don't Give Up" with Mark Isham blowing dulcet trumpet lines above
it all gives you the willies, surprisingly, it shouldn't. In fact, it's a highlight of this very successful all-star
album. Nelson, coming off a dry spell, sounds invigorated, the material is strong, and the musicianship

Here Willie covers a number of well-known songs and gives each of them his own hard-wonwisdom. "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" seems an impossible task, but Nelson gets under it. Paul Simon's "Bridge over Troubled Water" is different and "Whiter Shade of Pale" is a flash back to the 1960's. The title track is classic Nelson, as is the somber closer, "Party's Over."

Any album with an opening track as sensational as this one , the title track , deserves your attention .
From the first time I played this album , I thought is it impossible that the rest of this album can
complement " City Of New Orleans " and attempt to meet , farless maintain this exceptional standard .
Happily the answer was , and still is , yes ,and I have enjoyed this album many times since then .
Not only are the vocals impressive , but I thought the musical arrangements complemented both the
songs and the artists most satisfactorily . With the excellent mixing , and production , these are
additional attractive factors which most definately contribute towards your enjoyment of any album .

This straight reissue of Willie's second album (from 1966) proves that Nashville wasn't always unaware
of how to handle him. Backed by the tightest and jazziest edition of Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadors,
Nelson previews things to come in the '70s while reviving 12 of his favorite Western swing standards
and barroom ballads. Wade Ray, who uncorks hellacious fiddle solos on "Home in San Antone" and
"Columbus Stockade Blues," is an added attraction. Willie is the very sound of sorrow and loss on gems
like "I'd Trade All of My Tomorrows (For Just One Yesterday)," "Go On Home," and "Don't You Ever
Get Tired (Of Hurting Me)." He also turns in a robust "Fräulein," starts "Seasons of My Heart" at the
bottom of his range before modulating up effortlessly, and reaches way down for "Making Believe."
Lead guitarist Leon Rhodes and steel man Buddy Charlton provide solid support and superlative
