20 Essential Tracks From The Boxed Set: 1965-1990 The Byrds
Price $ 14.99
During the '60s, the Byrds were one of the consistently interesting groups that
expanded and changed their sound with nearly every record. This 20 track
sampler of the admirable 4-CD boxed set features a good chunk of what made
the Byrds an impressive bunch. From the first chiming 12-string guitar notes of
"Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" to the hyper-real psychedelia
of "Eight Miles High" to the country rock of "Goin' Back" and "Chestnut Mare,"
they always found their footing. The four tracks from their 1990 reunion are for
fanatics only and the absence of any excellent Gram Parsons material is
disappointing. However, the rest is simply life changing. --Rob O'Connor

Ballad Of Easy Rider {Remaster} The Byrds
Price $ 11.97
1969's "Ballad of Easy Rider" was the commercial shot in the arm that The
Byrds so desperately needed, reaching #36 on the charts when their previous
albums had been languishing (unfairly, I might add) near the bottom. Its
connection to the film "Easy Rider" is unfortunately in name only. You will not
find classic, trippy 1960s rock in the style heard on that film's soundtrack. In
fact, this album is a laid-back, sweetly-sung, gently-played experience,
anticipating much of the country-flavoured LA rock music of the 1970s (Poco,
The Eagles, Firefall, etc.).

Byrdmaniax {Extra Tracks} The Byrds
Price $ 11.97
Byrdmaniax has been sidelined ever since its original 1971 release, when it
arrived in the wake of the triumphant Untitled. At the time, the group's musical
diversity was beginning to suggest uncertainty, but in hindsight--and with the
inclusion here of three contemporaneous bonus tracks--there is much to savor.
Highlights include Roger McGuinn's poignant "Kathleen's Song" and the band's
striking cover of Jackson Browne's "Jamaica Say You Will." Skip Battin was
never better than on "Citizen Kane," a collaboration with maverick Kim Fowley.
Original tracks are enhanced by a sensitive alternate version of McGuinn's
"Pale Blue" and, particularly, by Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman."

Byrds Box Set [Untittled-Unissued] The Byrds
Price $ 23.72
Arguably the last truly great album from the Byrds, this was a double
vinyl set when it appeared in 1970. The 16-minute "Eight Miles High"
took up an entire side--allowing for plenty of the free-flowing guitar,
bass, and drum solos that were in vogue at the time. The live portion
of the program opens with a gritty "Lover of the Bayou" and an
inspired take on Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street." The studio set
centers around the group's biggest latter-day hit, "Chestnut Mare," as
well as Roger McGuinn's haunting "Just a Season.

Definitive Collection [Import] The Byrds
Price $ 18.99
Someone seeking an overview of the career of one of America's most
influential pop bands faces a dilemma: purchase Columbia/Legacy's 20-bit
remaster of THE BYRDS' GREATEST HITS with its liner notes, band history,
and additional photos, or buy a much larger volume of essential tracks without
the icing. If musical content is a higher priority than words on a sleeve, the
buyer can do no wrong in acquiring this fine Dutch issue. On the plus side, the
main disc contains a whopping 72 minutes of music, including every major hit
and important song from the span of Byrds repertoire. In addition, a bonus disc
is thrown in with four live selections, including the rousing 16 minute version of
'Eight Miles High', rivaling the Allman Brothers at the height of their free-form
Fillmore jams.

Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde [Remaster] The Byrds
Price $ 11.97
1969's "Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde" is the lowest-charting Byrds album, having
come off of an audience-alienating change of sound and direction ("Sweetheart
of the Rodeo") and the loss of two key members from The Byrds' more
innovative, commercial period. Free-loving, acid-dropping hippies were just not
ready for country and western music. Roger McGuinn, the only original Byrd
left, rebuilt The Byrds with bluegrass guitarist extraordinaire Clarence White in
an attempt to infuse their newly-acquired Nashville sound with a more
contemporary direction (relevant lyrics, fuzz-stoked electric guitar, etc.).

Farther Along [Extra Tracks] The Byrds
Price $ 11.97
Farther Along was the final album from the group who soared to worldwide
fame in 1965 on the wings of "Mr. Tambourine Man." Although overshadowed
on its initial release in 1972 by the frenzy of anticipation surrounding a
forthcoming reunion album featuring the original quintet, Farther Along proved
to be the better album. On it are indications of just what made the Byrds'
marriage of space-rock, country music, and pop such a special hybrid.
Clarence White's title track and the poignant "Bugler" display the band's
strengths admirably.
