This is a
"killer" country instrumental album: brave in its simplicity, bold in its style and tone....Like Johnny Cash's
American Recordings of late, this pairing of Ventures' legendary guitarist Nokie Edwards and the
equally-legendary Texas music pioneers, The Light Crust Doughboys creates the essence of country
and folk music utilizing, in some cases, just a few instruments....Folks, it's not how many notes you can
play (although Nokie and The 'Boys rip it up in a few instances), it's what you play and how you play it! I
just can't get enough of this Nokie guitar tone and the "just right" rhythm folk accompaniment of these
cowboy jazz men!....And Tom Brumley's haunting, liquid steel adds just the right seasoning...The only
thing better than listening to these masters on this high-fidelity CD would be to sit at their feet and watch
'em as they perform. Let's all hope Nokie/Light Crust Doughboys concerts aren't in the distant future! It's
such a pleasure to hear a guitar that sounds like a guitar...Just maybe, there'll be a series of these
musical album gems, sorta like the PLAY GUITAR WITH THE VENTURES series in the 1960s. This fine
CD could easily be the ultimate PLAY COUNTRY AND SWING GUITAR. Another great thing about this
is it's non-import, all-American price. Producers/arrangers Nokie and The Light Crust Doughboys have
given listeners an audio gift that will last a lifetime. Are there more gems like this to come from these
kings of the strings??

an audio treat to hear The Doughboys rockin' in a collection of all up-tempo gems----some old, some
new...It's as if Bob Wills came back to earth as a guitar man instead of a fiddle man!! Man, to hear these
western swing and early rock classics with The Doughboys' classic instrumentation and just the right
amount of vocal slap-back echo is too much!!! Yea, uh, huh.....I really like it!!! The sensational Salty
Dogs bring just the right amount of authentic hillbilly boogie to the table, and The Doughboys' and Art
Greenhaw's fabulous vocals are the rightful heirs to Elvis, Ricky Nelson, Johnny Cash, Carl
Perkins........and of course, Bob Wills and Tommy Duncan...Western Swing, blues, gospel, dixieland,
rockabilly-------what will these Boys conquer next----reggae??!!! Swing and roots rockers, this is a must

Wow! If ya wanna hear where white gospel has come from, there's nothing better than this vocalizing by
gospel James Blackwood of The Blackwood Brothers and the bluesy, cowboy jazz of The Doughboys
backing him up! James is the best, neatest gospel singer in the world in that "stand flat-footed and belt
'em out" style, and The Doughboys' and James' artistry really give this CD a folky feel......raw, plaintive,
Pentecostal-style gospel, yet incredibly rich and beautiful in its textures.....fans of this release will also
LOVE The Doughboys and JAMES quartet tribute album: THEY GAVE THE WORLD A SMILE.

Steel Away

This type of steel playing-----Hawaiian-style in the Jerry Byrd tradition-----is becoming a lost art. I believe
I even hear a vintage lap steel, in addition to pedal steel, being played on several cuts! And added with
the powerhouse James Blackwood voice, this historic CD is a must for gospel folk music fans. The
Doughboys' and Art Greenhaw's vocals really lend a rockabilly flavor to several of the cuts, and the
listener has all these slices of southern culture in 1 CD: southern gospel, country gospel, sacred
harp-type choral singing, a little rockabilly, American tenor banjo music----Maybe this CD should be
required textbook study for gospel music courses------except, unlike school work, it's fun and soulful. We
have here an exceptional CD, a wonderful non-commercial, non-formula project that inspires, soothes,
and energizes--an American classic from track 1 through track 16. Let's hope we hear a lot more of Tom
Brumley and The Light Crust Doughboys (and James Blackwood, too)! This may be the closest to Sun
Records-inspired gospel we'll hear in a long time!

I'd heard about this release as being one of its field's 5 best in the world a'la The GRAMMYS, and thanks
to amazon.com for stocking! It's a hard-to-find rarity! For that raw, 4 men and a piano gospel quartet
sound, fans, this is the group and sound that was there in the lab when it was invented! No
"middle-of-the-road" sermonettes for Christianettes here; this is powerful "I Won't Have To Cross
Jordan Alone" stuff-----full of majesty and power! The spoken introductions by the legends are worth the
price of this CD alone! ....the essence of what gospel music is all about,...or should be!
